Italian Animation

Cascade ACM SIGGRAPH and ASIFA Portland celebrate international art film

ANIMAZIONI! reveals Italy’s contemporary animation scene through 17 short films. The devil, a beautiful woman, the staring eyes of a disembodied head… There is often a dream-like quality in these films, fleeting glimpses of mysterious spaces inhabited by nameless beings suspended in time. A painterly tradition shines through — but also a powerful impulse to break the chains of convention. Perhaps you’ve seen one of BLU’s colossal graffiti animations, where mutating giants scramble across the sides of actual buildings? (If not, you must!) You’ll see this along with a host of artists that won’t be experienced anywhere else. Giovanni Munari, an Italian animator traveling abroad, brought these films along with him in his suitcase, hoping to find an audience in the USA. Acting as Portland’s animation embassy, ASIFA and Cascade ACM SIGGRAPH are proud to help share this rare, international gift.

Cascade ACM SIGGRAPH & ASIFA Present Exploring “The Animator’s Survival Kit” with Richard Williams

by on Oct.20, 2008, under Miscellaneous

Sponsored by LAIKA
Thursday,October 30, 2008
Portland Community College, Cascade Campus
Registration 6:00 pm
Presentation 6:30pm to 8:00pm
About the Speaker
Richard Williams is a three-time Academy Award winner. He has received Oscars for Special Achievement and Visual Effects as the director of animation on “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” (1988), and for his short film “A Christmas Carol” (1971).
Born in Toronto, Richard Williams became one of the finest animation filmmakers of the late twentieth century and has been a mentor to countless others.
Williams began his animation work in the states at United Productions of America in the 1950s, and became friends with Chuck Jones. He emigrated to Spain and then to England in 1955. In 1958 Williams won The British Academy of Film and Television Arts, (BAFTA) award for his work on “The Little Island.” Williams went on to direct the Academy Award-winning “A Christmas Carol” (1971). During the 1970s, his London-based studio created scores of stunningly crafted, award-winning commercials, titles, short films, and television specials. Not content with these successes, Williams then went on to hire veteran animators from the Disney studio’s “Golden Age” and from Warner Bros. Cartoons, most notably Grim Natwick (Snow White), Art Babbitt (Fantasia), and Ken Harris (Bugs Bunny). He also learned from his friends Milt Kahl (Pinocchio, The Jungle Book), and Frank Thomas (Bambi, Cinderella).
A distillation of his acquired knowledge went into the animation he directed for “Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ and, most recently, into an unparalleled and indispensable series of instructional DVD Master Classes based on his bestselling book “The Animator’s Survival Kit,“ published in 2000 by Farber & Farber. There are over 350 specially animated examples intercut with his 4-day Master Class filmed at Blue Sky Studios in New York.
